Starting a successful new business is tricky. You need a strong vision, purpose-driven tenacity, and it also helps when you have a like-minded business partner. When Joe met Pete, it was at one of Desk Space’s monthly member drinks events – an opportunity for the entire building of 50+ companies to get together and talk everything start-ups and living life. ‘It wasn’t long until we both requested we sit next to each other in order to speed up the development process of this new business, Hang With a Star.’

Pete Derbyshire, Director at Webthinking, has watched his web design partnership grow and evolve over the last 15 years. Pete moved to Sydney 7 years ago and found himself in a home office, going a little bit stir crazy and in desperate need of an office environment with other like-minded individuals. Luckily, Pete found Desk Space. Joe Hughes has worked in sports marketing and PR for 15 years and is also a committee member of ‘Secret Men’s Business’ with The Royal Hospital for Women Foundation. He saw the potential to combine his celebrity contacts with raising both funds and awareness for charities that extended beyond auction rooms and charity events.

With Pete’s unique set of web skills, they worked towards building a unique concept for the Australian market, a model that has seen huge success in the United States; spreading the word on a national scale about real-world issues, paired with a new way to donate to worthwhile charities – plus the opportunity to hang out with a celebrity!

Hang With a Star brings unique and exciting celebrity experiences to the public, while simultaneously raising funds and awareness for a range of charities. With an initial pilot campaign offering a day out at the Adelaide Oval with cricket legend Merv Hughes, partnering with The Children’s Charity – Variety and Cricket Australia. Hang With a Star currently has two LIVE campaigns – a VIP Fox Sports commentary box experience in Adelaide with cricketing legend Mike Hussey, helping to support Women and Infants Research Foundation, and another campaign ending in just under a week where you and a friend could grab lunch and go on a Sydney Harbour Cruise with Married at First Sight stars, Mick and Cyrell, with funds going towards supporting rural communities and farmers through Rural Aid.

‘It’s been invaluable to sit down with the other members at Desk Space and get immediate feedback on our ideas’, says Pete.
