Introduction

At Desk Space, we’re proud to showcase the incredible creative talent within our community. This month, we’re highlighting John+John, a studio that has been shaping brands and experiences since 2015, and their independent creative venture, Suhm.

The Start of Suhm

For John+John’s founders, Matt and Phil, creativity has always been about collaboration. Their work in branding and design naturally extended beyond client projects, leading them to explore a passion for pure artistic expression. With a shared love of form and composition—squares, triangles, circles, the building blocks of design—they founded Suhm as a creative playground where artists, designers, and illustrators could come together to create meaningful work.

Suhm is not just another design studio—it’s a space for collaboration, a platform where creativity is shared and amplified. Matt and Phil wanted to break away from the constraints of commercial work and focus on making beautiful, tangible art. The result? A collection of limited-edition prints, designed in partnership with other talented artists, that people can bring into their homes and spaces.

A Collective Approach to Creativity

Suhm thrives on collaboration. Each project is an opportunity to work with like-minded creatives, blending different styles and perspectives to produce artwork that feels both contemporary and timeless. Whether it’s minimalist geometric compositions or expressive, abstract designs, every print carries the signature of its creator while staying true to Suhm’s vision.

By partnering with designers and artists from various disciplines, Suhm fosters a sense of community, where the focus is on making art accessible and meaningful. The goal is simple: to create pieces that people can connect with, admire, and live with every day.

The Founders: Phil & Matt

Phil Clark – Co-Founder and Creative Director

Phil has led multiple design studios working with blue-chip corporate giants right through to cafes and everything in between. Having studied both industrial and graphic design in Melbourne, Phil’s approach is always carefully considered and reflects a passion for elegant simplicity. His eye for composition and design has been sought after by Décor, MediBank, Aussie, Thomson Reuters, ALL (Accor), Plenary Group, and more.

Overseeing the studio’s team and creative process, Phil finds solace in painting and architecture while continuing to pursue excellence and innovation in design, branding, and experiences.

Matt Strempel – Co-Founder and Creative Director

Matt’s creative fire was lit at a young age, decorating every surface he could find with scribbles and verse. This passion for imagery and words was refined at Singleton Ogilvy & Mather into a love of advertising creative; now a core offering of John+John.

After almost two decades in the industry, you might have seen Matt’s work on a billboard, watched it on TV, heard it on the radio, or read it in one of his books. More recently, he was officially announced as the grand prize winner of the 93rd Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition, beating out more than 3,500 submissions from 44 countries.

A Vision for the Future

Suhm is a testament to the power of collaboration and the belief that great design should be shared. As the collective grows, Matt and Phil continue to seek out new voices, new styles, and new ways to bring beautiful design into everyday life. Whether you’re an artist looking to collaborate or someone searching for a striking new piece to hang on your wall, Suhm invites you to be part of something bigger—a shared creative journey that celebrates art in its purest form.
